A veteran member of the organization’s leadership team\, Popkey manages relationships with key stakeholders in the community\, including federal\, state and local government and civic officials\, as well as regional economic development officials. He also oversees external communications and media relations for all non-football departments. Through the course of his career\, Popkey has been involved in many of the organization’s major events of the past 30-plus years\, including appearances in Super Bowls XXXI\, XXXII and XLV\, the redevelopment and subsequent expansions of Lambeau Field\, the development of Titletown\, and projects that celebrated the Packers’ 100th anniversary\, including a Midwest Emmy-nominated documentary\, Legacy: 100 Seasons of the Green Bay Packers\, and an award-winning\, four-volume book\, The Greatest Story in Sports\, Green Bay Packers 1919-2019. Drawing on his expertise in population dynamics\, predator-prey interactions\, and habitat management\, he will discuss the ecological and human factors shaping Wisconsin’s natural landscapes. Whether you’re a hunter or a conservationist — or simply someone who is passionate about the state’s wildlife — this talk will give you a deeper understanding of the delicate balance between conservation efforts and human interests. \nAbout the Speaker\n\nTimothy Van Deelen is a professor of forest and wildlife ecology and a faculty affiliate with the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. He is an expert in the conservation and management of large mammals in the Great Lakes region\, with a primary focus on deer and wolves. His research explores population dynamics\, predator-prey interactions\, species movement\, and the impacts of chronic wasting disease. A certified wildlife biologist\, Van Deelen has published more than 100 scientific papers on the ecology and conservation of native wildlife. His work has helped shape wildlife policy and management strategies in Wisconsin and beyond\, and he has trained biologists and researchers working in the Great Lakes region and around the world. He has been recognized with multiple awards\, including the Wisconsin Chapter of The Wildlife Society’s Wisconsin Award for exceptional contributions to the state’s wildlife resources\, the Beers-Bascom Professorship in Conservation\, and the Spitze Award for Land Grant Faculty Excellence from the UW’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. He is a fellow of The Wildlife Society and the 2024 recipient of their Jim McDonough Award for excellence in wildlife management. Van Deelen has advised the Wisconsin Conservation Congress and the Wisconsin DNR\, providing leadership on management policies. Herrick oversees the research\, teaching\, and outreach mission of the 300-acre natural area. He works collaboratively with preserve staff\, the preserve committee\, and Friends of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve to support the teaching and research mission of UW–Madison and promote the Wisconsin Idea. Herrick has more than 20 years of experience as a research ecologist. He was most recently the ecologist and research program manager at the UW Arboretum\, where he led diverse teams of ecologists\, land managers\, data analysts\, educators\, and citizen scientists to advance the science of restoration ecology while communicating to broad audiences. Herrick’s research interests include plant community ecology\, invasion biology\, and the effects of urbanization on ecosystem health. He is a founding member and codirector of the Healthy Soil Collaborative\, a partnership of researchers and outreach specialists from the United States and Canada\, conducting ecosystem-scale research on questions related to soil health\, invasive species\, and sustainability. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Luther College and a master’s degree in ecosystems studies from UW–Green Bay. Jennifer Gaddis\, associate professor of civil society and community studies at UW–Madison\, invites you to rethink the role of school food programs in supporting children’s health\, agricultural sustainability\, and community economies. She is an international expert on school food politics and systems change. Gaddis earned her PhD in environmental studies at Yale University in 2014. She authored the award-winning book\, The Labor of Lunch: Why We Need Real Food and Real Jobs in American Public Schools (University of California Press\, 2019) and is a principal investigator of a $1.5 million USDA-funded study of the school food workforce. She is the coeditor with Sarah A. Robert of Transforming School Food Politics Around the World (MIT Press\, 2024). Gaddis has also published articles in multiple journals\, including Feminist Economics\, Agriculture and Human Values\, Appetite\, and the Journal of Agriculture\, Food Systems\, and Community Development. \nAwardee Information\nJohn JB Lasater\, Lifetime Achievement Award\, 1988.\nJohn served as treasurer of our local chapter for over 15 years and was instrumental in our small chapter achieving Bascom status ten years in a row. He managed our chapter’s general and scholarship funds during this time. He helped organize annual Founders’ Day events and was a presence at our game watches and other programs. SUMMARY:WAA: Sheboygan Chapter's Fifth Quarter Social
DESCRIPTION:Build connections with local alumni as you experience a spirited presentation from Corey Pompey\, the Michael E. Leckrone Director of Athletic Bands at UW–Madison\, who will discuss his experiences leading the famed UW Marching Band. Wear your favorite red-and-white attire! \nThe cost is $25 per person or $15 for high school or college students. This includes a family-style dinner featuring broasted chicken and pot roast in pan gravy; homemade mashed potatoes; carrots\, broccoli\, and cauliflower in parsley butter; plated salad; and rolls and butter. Coffee\, milk\, and water are complimentary. A cash bar will be available serving wine\, cocktails\, and beer. \nRegister by April 27. \nAbout the Program\nEnjoy a special presentation: \nLeading the Band \nDr. Pompey will talk about his experiences leading the famed UW Marching Band\, as well as what it is like to succeed the legendary Mike Leckrone. He will give an inside look into the beloved organization that has been sharing music with the people of Wisconsin since 1885. \n\n5:00pm – Social Hour/Cash Bar\n6:00pm – Program Start\, Dinner Served\n\nAbout the Speaker\n \nCorey Pompey was appointed associate director of bands at UW–Madison in the spring of 2019\, succeeding longtime director Mike Leckrone. Before coming to Wisconsin\, Pompey was assistant professor of music and associate director of bands/director of athletic bands at the University of Nevada–Reno. Previously\, he served as the assistant director of bands at Pennsylvania State University. He also served as an assistant instructor with University Bands at the University of Texas–Austin. He was involved in all creative and administrative aspects of the program\, some of which include the University of Texas Wind Ensemble and the Longhorn Band. Pompey taught in the public schools of Alabama for seven years prior to moving to Texas. He holds a bachelor of science degree in music education and a master of arts degree in music education from the University of Alabama. This is just one of the many ways during Member Appreciation Month that we’re thanking you for being where Badgers belong as part of this special community. \nPop In When It’s Convenient for You\nThis is a drop-in\, family-friendly event featuring performances and prizes throughout! And remember to wear your favorite Badger red — or maybe some Earth Day–inspired attire since it falls on the same day. \nFree to attend. Registration is required due to capacity limits. \n\n\n\nHighlights Include:\n\nPerformances by members of the UW Marching Band\nBrief remarks from WAA’s executive director\, Sarah Schutt\nComplimentary appetizers from the artisan kitchens inside Garver Feed Mill\, ice cream from Calliope Ice Cream\, and one drink ticket per attendee (cash bar also available)\nA photo booth\, indoor yard games\, and giant inflatable Bucky\nA special giveaway for each member in attendance\n\nAll children must be accompanied by an adult. \nParking\nWAA staff will be on site to help direct parking. Garver Feed Mill has more than 100 free on-site parking spots available for visitors. Street parking and parking at nearby public parks in adjacent neighborhoods (many that are only a three-to-five-minute walk away) may be necessary because of the high number of attendees at this event.
