In Memoriam Allan M. Hida ’51, Japanese American Pioneer Educator

Many in the Japanese-language and global studies fields will remember Al Hida ’51, a retired science teacher who appeared at WCSS and Wisconsin ATJ conventions to talk about Japanese American history in the United States and his own experience as an incarcerated Japanese American teen during World War II. I (Madeline Uraneck ’71) randomly wondered how he was doing in California and Googled his name, only to find that he had passed away during the COVID years. I remember him fondly. I knew of no others who were reaching out to students and teachers on this topic during the 1990s–early 2000s. He made a real difference.
