Alumni Authors Meet through On Wisconsin

Carole Obry Wagener ’70, looking for a comparative book written by a female about war, stumbled across Sirens: How to Pee Standing Up written by Laura Naylor Colbert ’06 in the Diversions section of On Wisconsin magazine. Using Facebook, they quickly connected and compared notes about Carole’s book, The Hardest Year: A Love Story in Letters during the Vietnam War and Laura’s journal from the Iraq war, where she served in 2003. Although they had much in common, their stories occurred 35 years apart. Carole’s search finally ended when, in another On Wisconsin issue, she found Annette Langlois Grunseth’s ’72 book, Combat and Campus: Writing through War, in which she compiled her brother, Sgt. Peter R. Langlois ’67’s Vietnam letters with her poetry. The three have become close online friends and celebrate each other’s successes, including each having been awarded a medal for their books.
